Wines for Springtime and Beyond (Editor's Note: Justin Pitts, of Busters Liquors, is our new resident wine guy. In his first article, Justin delves into pairing wines with the Sunset Symphony and which wines go with which meats. Hope you enjoy and as always feel free to contact Justin with any questions.)

The Rites of Spring are here and for many of us that means drinking cheep beer at an ageless bar on Highland. Don’t get me wrong, I will always have a weakness for a cold Bud or two, or five; especially at my favorite watering hole where Too Tall Todd presides ringing his bell on my wallet’s behalf. But I’m not here to talk about frothy lager; I want to talk to you about vino! And just so you keep reading, I’ll keep it easy for all you oenophile “neophytes” and avoid sounding like that “over-the-top” geeky Miles character in the movie Sideways.

Below are a few “Sunset Symphony” wine ideas to enjoy during our grand celebration of the season, Memphis in May; as well as more suggestions that pair well with our famous Memphis Barbecue. So whether you’re chillin’ and grillin’ at the house, or stepping out to enjoy the Memphis springtime weather, the following suggestions will please your palate and get the head straight.

Think Zin for Barbecue!

Cline Zinfandel 2002 @ $9.99

This latest California Zinfandel from Cline cellars is the perfect match for all things BBQ. Ribs, pulled pork, even some saucy smoked chicken…..it all works great. Rich dark berry fruit such as black cherry and raspberry, and a long spicy oak finish match well with a variety of grilled meats. This wine would also be great with a Pittsburgh style rib eye.

Rosenblum Zinfandel Vintners Cuvee @ $12.99

For those of you who seek a wine with more fruit and less dryness on the finish, this bottle is for you. The term fruit-bomb could be easily used here, it’s like a black cherry had a one night stand with a plum and out popped Rosenblum Zin. Perfect with ribs or even a jerk spiced pork tenderloin.

Turner Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 @ $9.99

Let’s get one thing straight first; this wine is for the beef lovers! All of the fruit going into this bottle is sourced from Paso Robles where acreage is highly sought after. Rich Plums and dark currants are hanging out for a long smooth finish that will linger and make you think you’ve just spent a lot more than ten bucks. Show off your cooking skills and enjoy this with your favorite cut of steak.

Sunset Symphony Wines

Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc 2004 @ $12.99

New Zealand has recently been producing outstanding sauvignon blanc from the Marlborough region. This screw cap jewel is a vibrant, fresh young while boasting tropical melon fruit and clean bright acidity. It can be enjoyed as an aperitif or with smoked Gouda and sliced green apple. It is great complementing seafood dishes as well.

Zenato Pinot Grigio 2003 @ $12.99

This Italian white features notes of creamy honey and vanilla being chased by peaches and herbs. Enjoy as an aperitif (beverage before the meal) or pair with light shellfish pasta.

Tin Roof Pinot Noir Rosé 2003 @ $9.99

This is not white zin! That’s stuff is way too sweet compared to this wine. The Tin Roof Pinot Noir Rose is a “dry” style California vin gris made from 100% pinot noir from the esteemed Russian River Valley. Think fresh strawberry and raspberry with just a hint of sweetness on the finish. The wine is crafted to be one that is “best enjoyed outdoors” according to its sister winery, Murphy-Goode. The cap twists right off; so don’t worry about hauling around that big huge “rabbit” screwpull thingy-ma-jig all over Memphis with you. Fix a refreshing light citrus-style salad or fruit dish and you’re good to go.

Five Rivers Pinot Noir 2003 @ $9.99

This is by far the best pinot noir for the money I have tried in a long time. Black cherry and mild earthiness are well balanced and elegant. Put it in your backpack and take it to the park. Actually, buy two bottles and have one with some grilled salmon and the other with a hunk of St. Andre cheese. Enjoy it by itself, but never alone.

Thanks for the choices

If I didn't already know these things I would read this article and try these. Just kidding! Nice writing Justin and I look forward to your next writing. Jonathan, as I have said before, nice work and keep it up.
