HBR’s new live album, Live in the Northeast is available at hotbutteredrum.net now
On May 30, 2007, the phenomenal live bluegrass-inflected outfit known as Hot Buttered Rum will be making their first trip to the Bluff City. They will be playing the Gibson Beale St. Showcase, and the show starts at 8 PM (don’t be late!). Let’s show Butter some Memphis-style love by getting the Gibson Beale St. Showcase packed for their first visit to the birthplace of rock n’ roll. Let’s show them how Tennessee gets down!

As many of you know, we here at the DivingIn2Memphis.com World Headquarters ( a recently absconded three story building right in the heart of Voodoo Village) strive to keep you in the know with concerts, band interviews and other musical minutiae that should help your daily and nightly plans. Of course, one of our more pressing movements is to completely halt the workforce sitting in offices all day. We are here to make you happy and your bosses, well… not so much. Along these lines, we are now streaming an hour of music brought to you by the guys who form one of the great bands in the city. One day, I’m going to write a book about this collection of five very different souls, but for now, this is what everyone is getting. So, read on and get those headphones ready.

One of my favorite movies has always been, I’ll dare say it, the “classic” Monty Python’s Search for the Holy Grail. How are fart jokes and flesh wounds not timeless entertainment?
Though my parents, until recently, couldn’t understand why my sister and I found the statement “your mother was a hamster and you father smelled of elderberries!” so entertaining, they kindly gave us tickets to the broadway musical version; Spamalot. It opened in Memphis last night at the Orpheum.
I was both excited and skeptical. While I love the movie, the thought of it being a touring theater show sounded daring. If you have never seen or hear or it, the story is of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table and their quest to find the Holy Grail. A much told story in the form of satire and silliness, full of the aforementioned fart jokes and flesh wounds.

Interviewed By: Jonathan Kiersky
Richard Cushing of FreeWorld is, seemingly, known by everyone in this town who regularly goes out to see live music. He’s been an integral part of the Memphis music scene for the past twenty years and through the years has been a part of the remarkable underground music scene we enjoy in Memphis. Through his 18 years of playing with FreeWorld, Richard has witnessed the ebb and flow of the scene as well as the lack of national notoriety bestowed on this city for anyone not named Elvis, Hayes or Timberlake. As we all know, it’s not the music, as Memphis has always been a city where the locals trump the national acts, that has held the musicians back, but the utter neglect the Memphis scene is shown.
Richard Cushing was kind enough to give us some of his feelings and observations about the local scene, the national scene, FreeWorld and a few other notions that may be able to help local musicians.

In the wake of the last of the free music downloading sites, Limewire , now being taken to court for the purpose of shutting them down, finding unique music is going to be much tougher. Certainly with iTunes and Kazaa opening up as pay per download or monthly subscription music sites, the more popular music will be there for purchase, but those interesting tracks found sometimes by accident are the real reason that Limewire was such a popular music tool. As we’ve all found out, it’s much less of a headache to just go to a record store and purchase a full CD than it is to download the entire thing. Again, though, for those out-of-print tracks and those tracks that never make it to the store shelves, free downloading was a blessing. Now, we’re back to giving the artist a penny for every dollar we spend on their music. Tremendous job, Metallica! In your fears about music downloading and the money you’d lose, you forgot to make any music that people would even fathom buying in the first place. Ahh, the irony!
